Process Development Fueled by Enabling Technologies

1Advanced Chemistry Technologies, Global R&D Small Molecule Lonza, Visp

Despite the increasing focus on biologics, small molecules continue to dominate pharmaceutical sales, accounting for about 90% of the market. With advancing research, the complexity of novel small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is increasing. This escalation results in more extended synthetic pathways, decreased yields, and elevated costs. Process chemists face the challenge of developing reliable manufacturing processes while managing supply chains for raw materials and intermediates. Lonza's approach integrates AI-enabled informatics and automation technologies, including computer-aided synthesis planning (CASP) tools, to design efficient retrosynthetic paths. Combined with high-throughput experimentation (HTE), this strategy accelerates clinical readiness, reduce costs, and enhance strategic decision-making for pharmaceutical innovators. A recent application to an early-phase project will be presented to showcase the benefits of these technologies.
