Driving Sustainability in API Synthesis at Early-stage Development
In the pharmaceutical industry, the chemical process development function plays a crucial role at the intersection of drug discovery and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing. The primary objective of chemical development is to facilitate rapid, sustainable, safe, and cost-effective access to chemical modalities, whether they are in clinical development or already marketed, as part of life cycle management. Key intrinsic goals of chemical process development include minimizing resource consumption and waste generation, as well as eliminating the use of hazardous chemicals. Achieving these goals not only reduces production costs but also enhances process safety. Today, sustainability has become a “license to operate” topic and additional effort is needed, even at the early-stage development of the portfolio that goes beyond cost reduction. This presentation will emphasize initiatives aimed at advancing sustainability in API synthesis during the early stages of portfolio development.
